  • The La Crosse River rises in northern Monroe County and flows generally west-southwestwardly into La Crosse County, through the Fort McCoy military installation and past Sparta, Rockland, Bangor and West Salem. It flows into the Mississippi River at the city of La Crosse.

In Monroe County, it collects the short Little La Crosse River which flows for its entire course in Monroe County. Down stream of Sparta, the river is paralleled by the La Crosse River State Trail.

The La Crosse River State Trail has been developed from abandoned Chicago and Northwestern Railroad between Sparta and La Crosse. Prairie remnants, farmlands, trout streams, hardwood forests and wetlands are found along the trail. Packed limestone screenings provide a smooth riding surface. The bridges have planked floors and railings in place for riders safety. A new bridge (1998) at Medary crosses an active rail line running parallel to the trail. The bridge connects the La Crosse River State Trail to the Great River State Trail.

Scenery and history abound on the 21.5 mile La Crosse River State Trail. This trail is a connecting link between the Great River State Trail and the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Beyond Elroy lies the 400 Trail with 22 miles of scenic beauty connecting Elroy to Reedsburg. Recreationalists have approximately 101 miles of biking and hiking between Perrot State Park near Trempealeau and Reedsburg, Wisconsin.

With the miles of beautiful biking trails and canoeing and kayaking on the La Crosse River, Monroe County Wisconsin has been a tourists haven for decades. And with canoeing and kayaking rentals made easy and provided reasonably by Ellistone Canoe Rentals, the La Crosse river will continue to bring fun for the whole family for years to come.
